My name is Keith Crockett I'm a resident of Castle Rock. A couple of years ago I decided to leave corporate life and buy a franchise. One of the companies that was presented to me was a senior placement company. For a variety of reasons I ultimately decided to go with another opportunity to help businesses reduce costs. That company is called Schooley Mitchell. In May of 2024, I attended the Leading Age Conference in Vail. Our company has had great success in reducing communities operating costs without sacrificing service. I decided after that conference that I was going to direct my efforts and focus on communities. The savings can help the residents get even better care, it could go to employee appreciation funds or whatever the community feels is best. Shortly after the event I started joining various networking groups and events and learned these are my type of people. An industry where the focus is already on serving and helping people. I say all of this because I feel like I keep on getting drawn back to help seniors in some form or another.
At one of the networking events, James Creasey, Founder and CEO of Jiminy Wicket was speaking. He went on to relate a story about his father and how his father exhibited signs of vascular dementia. It was difficult for his father to have a traditional conversation with people, but on a trip his father rediscovered croquet. His father was able to enjoy himself and have a positive interaction with other people. James would go on to share other stories about the positive influence croquet a game that people of varying capabilities can play has helped instill confidence and better relationships. He does a way better job of telling his story. Check it out here. http://jiminywicket.org/about-jiminy-wicket/
Listening to James and hearing some sobering statistics on the lack of visits that some seniors receive got me thinking about finding ways to create engagement and enrichment for seniors. I first went down the idea of doing a seniors olympic games. Turns out that is a thing already though from my research we do not have any regional events here in the State of Colorado. Not one to be easily deterred from my mission, I pivoted and decided to host an event where communities from all over the Denver area could compete. At first I was going to name the event the Denver Seniors Board Games Championship, but I didn't want to limit this to just Denver. If our first inaugural event goes well, I plan on adding Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and a Western Slope Event in the future. So now we have the Colorado Seniors Board Games Championship.
Thanks to the support of several people encouraging me to do this we will have our first event on May 6th, 2024 in Centennial. It has been very exciting to see the momentum continue to grow and the enthusiasm about the event.
